Safe and Sustainable-by-Design Hydrogen Solutions for Europe

We pioneer a new wave of hydrogen technologies through the Safe and Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) approach, improving safety, performance, and environmental impact across the entire life cycle.

Project Introduction

GUESS-WHy (Grant Agreement No. 101192392) is a project funded under the Horizon Europe Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, dedicated to enhancing both sustainability and safety in Fuel Cell and Hydrogen (FCH) systems across Europe. The consortium unites research institutions, industrial stakeholders, and policy experts to produce practical guidance on Safe and Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) principles for multiple hydrogen applications.

By integrating lifecycle assessments, hazard identification, and stakeholder inputs, GUESS-WHy aims to refine product concepts, reduce negative impacts from the design phase onward, and bridge gaps identified in previous EU-funded projects such as eGHOST and SH2E. Through close collaboration, the partners intend to deliver validated, actionable guidelines that bolster the EU’s goal of a cleaner and safer hydrogen economy.

GUESS-WHy targets three core aspects
of the hydrogen value chain

  • Production

In production, we examine electrolyzers (including PEM, alkaline, and SOE) to ensure improved design concepts.

  • Storage

In production, we examine electrolyzers (including PEM, alkaline, and SOE) to ensure improved design concepts.

  • Utilization

For utilization, we focus on fuel cells and hydrogen-fueled gas turbines to reduce environmental impacts while maximizing reliability.
